What is the Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek?
The Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek is an incredible hike offering stunning views of the Dhaulagiri massif, the seventh-highest mountain in the world and over 8000m high. You will explore a diverse range of landscapes (tropical forest, terraced fields, alpine meadows, and challenging high mountain passes) as well as unforgettable cultural experiences. The Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek is an exhilarating and demanding adventure.
This information in this article is written to help you decide if this is a trek for you. It was written after I lead the trek for Roland Hunter, of The Mountain Company (https://www.themountaincompany.co.uk/trips/dhaulagiri-circuit) in October 2023. Where is the Dhaulagiri Trek?
The trek is in western Nepal so it is less frequented by tourists and trekkers than the Everest region or Langtang. Accessible from Pokhara then by jeep or bus to the town of Beni. The trek finishes in Jomsom in the Mustang region, which is famous for its apple orchards and stunning mountain views.
What is the route for the Dhaulagiri trek?
The Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek is divided into four trekking stages. The first stage of the trek begins in Beni and continues through villages of Muri and Boghara ascending forested paths with stunning views of the surrounding mountains. You continue to the Italian Base Camp. The second stage of the trek starts from the Italian Base Camp and continues towards the Dhaulagiri Base Camp, here you will be walk in glacier and crossing fast flowing meltwater rivers. The third stage takes you over the high (5360m) French Pass into the Hidden Valley, before finally heading out over the Dhampus Pass (5,240m). This is followed by a descent to Marpha and Jomsom which marks the end of the trek.
How many days does it take to complete the Dhaulagiri trek?
Most trek options are 18- 20 days long. Of course allows for a few very important days for acclimatisation along the route. Since this trek crosses two 5000m+ plus passes rest and acclimitization days are essential.
What time of year can you complete the Dhaulagiri trek?
Your main trekking seasons for the Dhaulagiri Trek are during the spring season (March to May) and the autumn season (September to November).

Prices will vary from trekking company to trekking company. Of courses I would recommend going with a long-standing reputable company. Certainly check out their reviews. Make sure they give you plenty of days to acclimatise on the trek. I would recommend The Mountain Company.
What is the accommodation on the trek?
In terms of accommodations along the Dhaulagiri Trek, it can be combination of tea houses and camping, but many groups camp all the way. This evidently means that you will need to carry your own camping equipment, including food.
Is the Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek the most difficult trek in Nepal?
The Dhaulagiri trek is renowned for its level of difficulty and therefore is considered one of the most challenging treks in Nepal. Clearly need a high degree of physical fitness, as it involves traversing multiple high mountain passes. The Hidden Valley is cold, really cold. Also, the route is mainly camping so there are no luxuries!
Can I do the Dhaulagiri circuit trek solo?
The Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek is known to be one of the most challenging camping treks in Nepal. You have to carry a lot of equipment and food for the journey. Hence this isn’t a solo trip. However you can hire porters and a cook who can help you round the circuit and this way you will be safely guided. Therefore you will learn valuable local incites to the area and be immersed in local culture.
