Island of Capri

Island of Capri is know for the all year round mildness of its climate and the beauty of its scenery. The rocky coastline features the Arco Naturale and Faraglione landforms, shaped over many years by the erosive power of the sea. Marina Grande, a cluster of colourful houses, home to Capri’s fishermen and the island’s biggest beach.

Capri Town is where you’ll find most of the island’s shops and restaurants, and a great thing to do in Capri is to take the chair lift to the top of Monte Solaro, the highest point on the island, and walk back down to the harbour area.

At the Marina Grande ferry port on Capri, you can take one of Capri’s smaller tourist boats for a tour of the island. We took a Laser Boat ride around the island to view the Elephant Arch and Faraglioni Rocks.

How to get to Capri?

While Capri is an easy day trip from Naples or Sorrento, the most popular ferry times do get booked up quickly, even outside of peak season. Check ferry times for Capri.

In Sorrento the port is located 800 meters and 150 steps down from Tasso Piazza. In Naples the ferry runs from Molo Beverello and Calata Porta di Massa which are adjacent piers, about 200 meters apart. The easiest way to get there from the Stazione Centrale (Piazza Garibaldi) or Capodichino Airport is the “Alibus”. It is a shuttle bus that circulates just between those three stops in Naples – the train station, the airport and the ferry port. It runs about every 20-30 minutes. Tickets can be purchased aboard for €5.

Can you walk around Capri?

Capri is ideal to walk around. Indeed, many of the streets are too narrow for modern vehicles.

Public transport on Capri

Port of Marina Grande-Capri Town by funicular railway: €2.20 per person per way; every 15 minutes. The funicular railway is usually closed between January-March.

Will I see any A listers?

Capri’s reputation precedes it. A glitzy playground for movie stars and millionaires, the island of Capri’s sun-soaked shores. However, during the day when Capri is flooded with tourists and cruise ship passengers the stars are hiding in their expensive residences and only come out after 6pm once the tourists have left the island.

What are the Faraglioni Rocks?

The Faraglioni Rocks legend has a history that dates to ancient times. According to the legend from the Odyssey, these iconic rock formations were formed by the Greek hero Odysseus as he sailed through the Strait of Messina. While trying to navigate his ship through the narrow passage, Odysseus encountered sea monsters and sirens who tried to lure him off course. To escape their grasp, he threw huge rocks into the water, which became the Faraglioni Rocks we see today.
