Canoeing Loch Maree
Loch Maree, one of Scotland’s most stunning freshwater lochs, offers an unforgettable canoeing adventure through landscapes rich in natural beauty, wildlife, and ancient history. Among its many islands, Isle Maree stands out as a place steeped in legend, home to ancient graves and sacred sites that date back centuries. Paddling its waters is not just an outdoor experience—it’s a journey into Scotland’s past.
In the north west Highlands of Wester Ross this is a truly wonderful place.
A Canoe Journey Through Ancient Caledonian Pine Forest
As we launched our canoes onto the clear waters of Loch Maree, we were immediately immersed in the wild grandeur of the ancient Caledonian pinewood that fringes the loch’s shores. These remnants of Scotland’s original forest are some of the most pristine in the country, with twisted Scots pines that have stood for centuries. The woodland is a haven for wildlife, including red deer, pine martens, and crossbills, the latter often seen flitting through the canopy. Paddling beneath these towering pines, with their gnarled roots gripping rocky shores, feels like stepping back in time to a wilder Scotland.
Isle Maree: Legends, Burials, and Sacred Waters
The heart of our adventure was reaching Isle Maree, an island wrapped in mystery. This tiny islet is home to an ancient graveyard, where medieval stone markers hint at burials that may include Viking warriors. Some legends suggest that a sixth-century hermit, Saint Máel Ruba, once lived here, and that the island was a place of pilgrimage for those seeking healing from its sacred well.
One of the most famous traditions of Isle Maree is its role in ancient druidic rituals, particularly involving a sacred oak tree where offerings were made for good fortune. Even Queen Victoria visited the island in 1877 and noted in her diary the eerie atmosphere and historical significance of the site.
Wildlife Encounters: The Return of the White-Tailed Eagles
Loch Maree is not only a place of historical importance but also a key site for wildlife conservation. In the 1980s, it became a reintroduction site for white-tailed sea eagles, which had been driven to extinction in Scotland by the early 20th century. Today, these majestic birds—one of the largest raptors in the world—can once again be seen soaring above the loch, their massive wings casting shadows over the water as they hunt for fish.
As we paddled across the loch, we were lucky enough to witness one of these incredible birds swooping low over the water, scanning for its next meal. The sight of a white-tailed eagle gliding effortlessly against the dramatic backdrop of Slioch Mountain is something that stays with you long after the journey is over.
A New Beginning: Red Squirrel Reintroduction
Beyond the towering pines and soaring eagles, Loch Maree is now playing a role in another conservation effort—the reintroduction of red squirrels. Once widespread across Scotland, red squirrel populations have declined due to habitat loss and competition from invasive grey squirrels. However, recent conservation work has seen a new red squirrel reintroduction programme in the woodlands around Loch Maree. These charming native squirrels are slowly making a comeback, and canoeing along the shore gives you a chance to glimpse them darting through the branches.
