Visit Sorrento & a Lemon Farm in Sorrento, Land of the Lemon
Our day in and around Sorrento is a fun experience making us feel quite Italian. In only a day we had Ice Cream (gelato) making and olive oil making demonstration. Plus a demonstration of the mozzarella cheese making process.
We also made our own Nepolitan pizzas and ate them (yum) and sampled the local lemon liqueur, Limoncello.
Ice Cream Making
The started in Sorrento with an ice cream making demonstration at Gelateria David. What a great way to start the day, David was great fun and gave us his secret gelato recipe to try at home. His gelatos are fresh and use seasonal fruits and vegetables. This award-winning restaurant does waffles too. We enjoy the taste and also David’s explanation of how to make his ice cream.

wee wild adventures
While exploring the historic streets of Sorrento, wind your way down toward the Villa Comunale Park. Nearby you’ll see the entrance to the Church of San Francesco has a side entrance leading into a beautiful 14th-century cloister. Once of Sorrento’s most peaceful spots.
For a sea food lunch head to the charming Marina Grande Harbour. Follow the steep road and stairs that leads to the small harbour of Marina Grande.
Visit a Lemon Farm and make a pizza
Driving on the Amalfi Coast road you’ll spot terraces of lemon groves climbing high up the steep cliffs. The lemons produced in this beautiful part of Campania have been prized for centuries for their intense flavour and healthy properties. By the 1800s, the lemons of the Sorrento Peninsula were renowned for their intense flavour and healthy properties and were being exported as far as America.
The hardworking farmers of the Sorrento Peninsula continued the challenging work of carving out new terraces in the rocky mountainsides.
We took a short ride out of Sorrento and visited Agriturismo Galatea, a small organic working farm which has farmed for four generations. Using traditional and organic methods they cultivate typical products on the characteristic Sorrento terraces such as the Sorrento lemon and olive trees to produce extra virgin olive oil.
A guided walk of the lemon and olive groves with an overview of the cultivation & harvesting process in season. Next is a demonstration of the mozzarella cheese making process and a demonstration of how to make olive oil.
The visit included the services of an English-speaking guide. At the end of the main tour we make our own pizza in a traditional oven. It was great fun and tasted sublime!
What is Limoncello?
In Campania, limoncello (Italian lemon liqueur) is served very cold in pretty or decorative glasses. It’s high alcohol content means you can store it in the freezer and pour it into chilled frosty glasses. Many shops will also offer you a sample, so you can taste the local varieties during your travels until you find the perfect balance of sweetness and the distinctive, tart lemon flavour.
How to get to Sorrento from Naples?
