African Tea – How to make Masala Chai

  • Firstly -1 teaspoon of black tea leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon of masala chai mix
  • 2 cups of water
  • 2 cups of milk
  • Bring mixture to boil and simmer
  • Simmer for approx 5 minutes
  • Strain your chai mixture
  • Finally – Serve warm (extra tea mixture can be stored in a thermos for drinking later in the day)

What are the ingredients of Masala Chai

  • Ginger
  • Black pepper
  • Cardamon
  • Cinnamon
  • Cloves
  • Nutmeg
  • Of course you can use other ingredients depending on what you love in your mix

Masala Chai Recipe, Make your own mix!

Ultimately I prefer my tea with more ginger and very little cinnamon of course all taste buds are different.

Consequently this Recipe for my mix (makes approximately 12 cups)

  • 2 x tablespoons of ground ginger
  • 1 x tablespoon of cinnamon
  • 2 x teaspoons of ground cardamon
  • 3/4 tablespoon of black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon of ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon of ground cloves

Store your mix in an air tight container or glass.

Masala Chai versus Chai

Masala Chai as we can see is tea, milk and a blend of spices.

Chai is tea with a lot of milk. Sometimes this is known as Chai Latte (50/50 water and milk).

Masala Chai versus African Tea

Since African tea often has liquorice and fennel seeds as part of the African tea mix. The main difference is that a few extra ingredients may be added or omitted.

While Liquorice and Fennel Seeds, like ginger add a bit of extra heat. Indeed a Tingle to your tongue.

Rwandan Ginger Tea is a lovely tea overall slightly fiery on your tongue. The main ingredients of Rwandan Ginger Tea is of course Ginger. Normally no other spices are used in the making of Rwandan Ginger Tea. Here is a great Rwandan Tea Recipe.

Masala Chai traditionally has a lot more spices.
