  • Condition under foot: Can be muddy, best to wear walking shoes or boots. We walk the route after a reasonable dry spell and still encounter sections of mud.

One black labrador is happy swimming in the waters as it’s owner throws its ball.

We arrive on a Saturday lunch time and find ample layby parking makes accessing the hiking trails a breeze.

9. Well-Marked Circular Route

Once we found the start, near the Bannock Burn bridge, we quickly find the first waymarker. This waymarker takes is into the deciduous woodland with a smart dry path underfoot. Navigation is a breeze thanks to the well placed waymarkers, signposting the circular route that encircles the reservoir. We stay on course and don’t miss any of the scenic highlights along the way.

10. Trig Point Views and Bridge Crossings

A high point of the hike is reaching the trig point, where panoramic views of the surrounding countryside await. In the distance we see Ben Lomond, Ben Ledi, and the linked pair of Stuc a’Chroin and Ben Vorlich to the north. Crossing over picturesque bridges and boardwalks adds to the charm of the journey, with each step bringing you closer to nature’s wonders.

The Wildlife

There are quite a few geese, ducks and gulls on the Reservoir. We are lucky enough to have a low fly past from a skeen of Canadian Geese. The off shore islands would make a perfect nesting place for the birds. Also we heard our first Cuckoo of the season!

I also spot a couple of Pine Marten poops which are plainly in sight along our pathway!

Swimming at North Third Reservoir – don’t do it!

We would strongly advice against swimming at North Third Reservoir. I remember a fellow student from our High School, Bannockburn High, who died one summer at North Third. The waters are extremely cold and the distance to the islands can be deceptive.

Algae Bloom another reason not to swim here

There are signs all around the reservoir not only advising of the dangers of swimming but the dangers of algae bloom. Be careful!
